The new normal is probably going to be one where the COVID-19 persists indefinitely. As restaurants and stores start getting back to full operations again, there are precautions we can all take to protect ourselves and those around us. As Medical News Today points out, here are some suggestions that reduce the risk of getting sick.

Vaccinations

While there is still no vaccine for COVID-19, we can reduce our risk of exposure to other illnesses, like the flu, through vaccinations. Even though it might not block all of the symptoms, it can reduce the severity and help minimize the likelihood of a hospitalization.

Disinfecting Surfaces

Using products that contain alcohol or bleach to wipe down certain surfaces that are frequently touched can reduce the spread of viruses. According to the Wall Street Journal, McDonald’s just released a 59-page document outlining the process for keeping their restaurants clean and patrons safe. While this might seem excessive to some, the abundance of caution is something we can all benefit from. And keeping surfaces clean in a place as busy as McDonald’s can help minimize the spread of illnesses.

Taking zinc supplements

Those with zinc deficiencies can have weakened immune response and inflammatory conditions. And with weakened immune responses, it’s harder to fight of infections. Zinc is found naturally in foods like meat, fish, and nuts. It’s suggested that taking a zinc lozenge can reduce the duration of common colds by about 33%. So, quickly getting back to a normal routine, symptom free, can reduce the likelihood of spreading the illness.

Eating More Fiber

Dietary fiber has many health benefits. But a recent study also suggests it may boost the immune system.

Avoiding cigarette smoke

Smoking is a known risk factor for several diseases. Secondhand smoke also increases the risk of those diseases. Immune systems are affected by smoke or secondhand smoke and that reduces one’s ability to fight off infection. Quitting smoking and avoiding secondhand smoke are great ways to improve overall health and reduce the chances of getting sick.

Exercising

Regular physical activity can improve general health and wellbeing and reduce the risk of illnesses like heart disease, stress, & anxiety, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. In addition to these, it can improve health function and decrease the risk of respiratory infections.

As with any suggestions on health, consult with your physician on what is best for you. The suggestions above are potentially a great way to keep yourself healthy. For all of us it will require some changes to our normal routine but can be a benefit to us and those around us.
